[Windows 11/10] Troubleshooting - Yellow Exclamation Mark (yellow bang) on Firmware/Firmware update was unsuccessful

Applicable Products: Notebook, Desktop, All-in-One PC, Gaming Handheld

 

If you recently updated the BIOS on your device and the Firmware in Device Manager shows a yellow exclamation mark with a message indicating 'Firmware update was unsuccessful' or 'This device cannot start/cannot work properly', please follow the methods provided below to resolve the issue.

Note: The firmware device name in the illustrations may vary depending on the product model.

 

System with Device Encryption/Standard BitLocker Encryption Enabled

If your system has device encryption or standard BitLocker encryption enabled, it might interfere with the completion of the BIOS update. Learn more about the Introduction to Device Encryption and Standard BitLocker Encryption.

Please disable device encryption/standard BitLocker encryption. The system may prompt you to restart the device to complete the BIOS update, or you can restart it manually. Learn more about How to disable Device encryption & Standard BitLocker encryption.

 

Manual Cancelation of BIOS Update or BIOS Update Failure 3 Times

If you manually canceled a BIOS update during the process or if the BIOS update failed three times, it could result in a yellow exclamation mark in the Device Manager for firmware.

Resolve the issue according to the error code provided: 

If the firmware error is (Code 10)

  1. Open the Device Manager, right-click on the firmware with the yellow exclamation mark, and click on [Uninstall device].       
  2. Check [Attempt to remove the driver for this device]and click [Uninstall].       
  3. After uninstallation, click on the [Scan for hardware changes] icon in the taskbar.       
  4. The firmware device should now display normally.       
  5. Once the firmware device is displayed normally, update the BIOS to the latest version to enhance system stability and optimization. Learn more about updating the BIOS:

If the firmware error is (Code 14)

  1. Click [Restart Computer].       
  2. Check [Restart the computer when I click Finish]and click [Finish].       
  3. The system will automatically restart and initiate the BIOS update. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the BIOS update.       
    The firmware device will display normally after the BIOS update is completed.       

 

Yellow Exclamation Mark Appears on ASUS Component Firmware Update

  1. Open Device Manager, right-click on [ASUS Component Firmware Update], and click on [Uninstall device]
  2. Check [Attempt to remove the driver for this device]and click [Uninstall]
  3. After the uninstallation is complete, ASUS Component Firmware Update will disappear. 
  4. Restart your device.
  5. Once you have entered the Windows system, connect your device to the internet and perform a Windows Update. Windows Update will locate and update ASUSTek COMPUTER INC. - Firmware. Learn more about How to Use Windows Update to Update System and BIOS.
  6. After the firmware update is complete, the ASUS Component Firmware Update should display normally. 
  7. Once ASUS Component Firmware Update is displayed correctly, please also check if HID Keyboard Device is present under the Keyboard category. 
    If the HID Keyboard Device is not displayed correctly, please repeat steps 1 to 6.
