[LCD Monitor] ASUS 4K 120Hz IPS LCD monitor VRR Flicker issue on PS5

After Sony released the new firmware (F/W version, see below picture_1), which supports HDMI VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) in this April ‘22, we’ve got feedback from end-users saying that flicker issue happens when Graphics Mode is switched to “Fidelity” mode. ASUS has studied and simulated the issue and found out that the flicker is the physical limitation related to IPS panel. We’ve also collected the same issue with other monitor brands with similar 4K 120Hz spec.

We have informed Sony PS5 of this issue, and we are in discussion with them about how to fix this issue simultaneously. We hope that this compatible issue may be resolved by PS5 firmware update in the near future. Before that, we will advise users to change the Graphics Mode default setting to “Performance” mode instead to avoid the above issue.

Affected Models: ROG Swift PG32UQ, ASUS TUF Gaming VG28UQL1A, ASUS ProArt PA32UCG

PS5 settings that might cause the flicker issue:

1. The latest PS5 firmware that supports VRR (see F/W version in the image)

2. PlayStation 5  OSD -> Screen and Video -> Video Output -> Turned VRR to Automatic

3. Visual Setting -> Graphics Mode -> Default setting as Fidelity

Solution:

If flicker happens, please change setting to Performance. Turn-off your monitor and wait for 3-5 minutes and turn it back on. The flicker issue will disappear.
