[Chromebook] Troubleshooting - How to fix recovery failed problems
If you have trouble recovering your Chromebook operating system, there are some methods for resolving them.

An unexpected error has occurred
- Please make sure you completed all instructions exactly in the Recover Chromebook with the external storage chapter.
- Refer to the following steps to use the Erase recovery media function, then try creating the recovery media again.
- Open Chrome browser, click the [Extensions] icon at the top right of your browser window①, then select [Chromebook Recovery Utility]②.
- Insert the recovery media you used (USB flash drive or SD card). Click the [Settings] icon at the top right③, then select [Erase recovery media]④.
- Select the USB flash drive or SD card you would like to erase from the dropdown menu⑤, then select [Continue]⑥.
- Confirm the storage device you used for recovery is listed, then select [Erase now]⑦. The recovery tool will erase everything on your storage device.
- When you get the message “Your recovery media has been erased”, click [Done]⑧.
- Please follow all instructions in the Recover Chromebook with the external storage chapter to create recovery media again.
- If the problem persists, please try using a different USB flash drive or SD card to recover.
Please remove all connected devices and start recovery
If you get the message “Please remove all connected devices and start recovery”, first please remove anything that’s connected to your Chromebook, such as a mouse or external hard drive.
Then, follow the steps in the Recover Chromebook operating system article to recover.
The device you inserted doesn’t contain ChromeOS
- First, please make sure that you inserted the USB flash drive or SD card you used to create recovery media. And, you completed all instructions exactly in the Recover Chromebook with the external storage chapter.
- If you used the correct storage device, but still see this error, the storage device might not be working properly. Refer to the following steps to use the Erase recovery media function, then try creating the recovery media again.
- Open Chrome browser, click the [Extensions] icon at the top right of your browser window①, then select [Chromebook Recovery Utility]②.
- Insert the recovery media you used (USB flash drive or SD card). Click the [Settings] icon at the top right③, then select [Erase recovery media]④.
- Select the USB flash drive or SD card you would like to erase from the dropdown menu⑤, then select [Continue]⑥.

You successfully recovered your Chromebook, but now you can’t use your USB or SD card with Windows
- First, please use the Chromebook recovery tool to erase your recovery media.
Open Chrome browser, click the [Extensions] icon at the top right of your browser window①, then select [Chromebook Recovery Utility]②. - Insert the recovery media you used (USB flash drive or SD card). Click the [Settings] icon at the top right③, then select [Erase recovery media]④.
- Select the USB flash drive or SD card you would like to erase from the dropdown menu⑤, then select [Continue]⑥.
- Confirm the storage device you used for recovery is listed, then select [Erase now]⑦. The recovery tool will erase everything on your storage device.
- When you get the message “Your recovery media has been erased”, click [Done]⑧.
- Next, you must format your USB flash drive or SD card.
Please reinsert your USB flash drive or SD card, you will get the message “the device could not be recognized”. Click [Format this device]⑨.
If you didn’t get the message, please click the Files icon on the Shelf. - Select the device cannot be recognized⑩, then click [Format device]⑪.
- Choose the format type you would like to use⑫, then select [Erase and Format]⑬.
Note: If format a device, all data stored on it will be deleted. - After the format is finished, your USB flash drive or SD card will be working normally.
