[Wireless Router] How to check the information of devices connected to ASUS router?

If you want to know which devices, such as mobile phones or computers, are connected to your ASUS router, or want to manage them easily - for example, by checking MAC address or prohibiting them from using the network - you can refer to the instructions in this article.

 

 

Prepare

1. Some functions of wireless will be different due to firmware version.

2. Please install the ASUS router app on your smart phone device first. Please make sure your ASUS Router App version is up to date.

You can set up your ASUS router via Web GUI or ASUS Router app.

ASUS Router app

 1. Connect your phone directly to the WiFi network of the ASUS router you want to manage.

 2. Login to the App and tap [ Settings ].

     Here you can see the list of connected and offline devices and display the device name/IP address/connection type.

 3. Tap the name of the device you want to query in the list. Here we take the device name Phone as an example.

     You can see the following features here. (Note: Some features may vary depending on the firmware version and the features supported by the router)

  • 1. Device name : You can manually change the display name.
  • 2. MAC address : The MAC address of this device.
  • 3. IP address : The IP address assigned by the router to this device.
  • 4. Interface : This device is wired or WiFi connected.
  • 5. Connection quality : The signal strength of this device connected to the router.
  • 6. Access time : The time the device has been connected to the router.
  • 7. Real-time traffic : The upload and download traffic that this device is currently connected to the network.
  • 8. Device icon : Tap on the icon of the replaceable device.

 

This device is not allowed to connect to the Internet.

Reconnect this device to the router.

ASUS Router Web GUI

The following example demonstrates how to quickly view the network devices connected to the router by using the ASUS router ZenWiFi AX(XT8).

1. Connect your computer to the router via wired or WiFi connection and enter your router LAN IP or router URL http://www.asusrouter.com to the WEB GUI.

Note: Please refer to How to enter the router setting page(Web GUI) to learn more.

2. Key in your router's username and password to log in.

Note: If you forget the user name and/or password, please restore the router to the factory default status and setup.

3. Find the Client status

Go to [Network Map] > Click Clients icon in the middle  > The right side shows Client status.

You can find the information about all the connected devices from the Client status.

Wired
Wireless (2.4GHz, 5GHz, 6GHz)

4. Client status introduction
4-1 Three status: Online, Wired and Wireless.
  • Online: All network devices connected to the router (including wired and wireless connections).
  • Wired: Shows only network devices that are wired to the router.
  • Wireless: Shows only network devices that are wirelessly connected to the router

4-2 Device information

Click on the MAC address and it will display the detailed information, as shown in the picture below.

  • MAC Address: The MAC address of this device is 04:XX:XX:XX:XX:76.
  • Wireless radio: This device is connected to the router via 2.4 GHz, and -47 dBm is the current connection signal strength (for information about dBm, please click here).
  • Tx Rate: 65 upload speed.
  • Rx Rate: 1 download speed (for information about TX/RX, please click here).
  • Access time: The time the device has been connected to the router.
  • Manufacturer: The router will automatically retrieve the brand information provided by the connected device, or it can be manually changed (please click here).

5. Manage connected devices

       Click on the device icon to display the information as shown in the picture below. The following instructions explain the items that can be changed.

  • 5-1 You can manually change the display name of the device in [Name].
  • 5-2 Click [Change] to change the display icon of the device, click [Default] and the router will automatically detect.
  • 5-3 Block Internet Access: After enabling this option, this device cannot connect to the Internet.
  • 5-4 Time scheduling: This function can limit the time of a specific device to access the Internet. For more information, please refer to this FAQ: [Wireless Router] How to set up Parental Controls?
  • 5-5 MAC and IP Address Binding: Assign this IP address to this device. For more information, please refer to this FAQ: [LAN] How to set up DHCP Server on ASUS Router?
  • 5-6 After changing the settings, click [Apply] to save.

 

 

 

 

FAQ
1. How to determine the current connection signal strength based on the dBm value?
  • Signal strength (good): -20dBm to -70dBm
  • Signal strength (fair): -71dBm to -80dBm
  • Signal strength (weak): -81dBm or higher

    The current signal strength can be determined based on the dBm value.

2. What does Tx Rate/ Rx Rate mean?

    Tx Rate: Transport rate, refers to upload speed.

    Rx Rate: Receive rate, refers to download speed.

 

3. How can I block an unknown device that is connected to my WiFi network?

    a. It is recommended to change the password of the Wi-Fi network on your router.

    b. Block Internet access on this device, as shown in the following picture.

  • Log in to the ASUS Router App, tap [Devices] and then tap the name of the device in the list of online or offline devices, tap [Block] in this device setting to block it.
  • Log in to the Web GUI, click on the device icon > click [ON] in [Block Internet Access] > click [Apply] to save, and the device will display the icon of block Internet access on the list.

 

4. What is the maximum length of the device name ?

Device name limit is 32 characters (letters, numbers or mixed)

 

5. Why do I see my device multiple times or unknown on the device list of the ASUS Router?

If your device enable MAC Address Randomization, due to MAC address randomization, a device that randomizes its address might not be identifiable and will show up with an [Unknown] type or an imprecise device name in the app/Web.

You can choose to disable random MAC addresses on the device itself.

6. Can I change the device name of an ASUS router or node router?

Currently, you cannot change the device name of the router that appears in the device list.
