[Wireless Router] Troubleshooting - Computer(WiFi device) cannot find the WiFi name(signal) of ASUS router

There are some situations that WiFi device(computer or phone) cannot find the WiFi name(signal), like can't find 2.4G/ 5G not working /don't show 6G, or it may be a problem with the WiFi device or the network. Please refer to the instructions below.

Proper noun : SSID (Service Set Identifier) name is also the WiFi name of the wireless network.

Note:

a. It is recommended to try to use other devices (laptops or other phones) to connect to the same wireless (WiFi) network to confirm whether the same situation exists.

If it's a computer problem, it's recommended to contact your phone manufacturer for help.

b. After trying to remove the ASUS router, use other devices (laptops or other routers) to connect to your ISP modem to confirm whether situation is the same.

If it is a problem with the ISP modem, it is recommended to contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to confirm the network issues.

c. Supported channels of 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz WiFi differ according to each country’s local law and restrictions.

For example, your computer's network card and wireless router both support 6 GHz, but your country/region is not available for 6 GHz, you may not be able to connect.

Introduces

1. Check whether your computer has a wireless network adapter and enable

2. Check whether the distance between your computer and the router is too far

3. Forget WiFi connection

4. Check your wireless router's WiFi name

5. Check if your wireless router is set to turn off or hide the WiFi signal

6. Try to disable the DFS channels

7. Update firmware

8. Standard Reset

1. Check whether your computer has a wireless network adapter and enable:
  • 1-1 Type and search [ Device Manager ] in the Windows search bar
  • 1-2. Find your wireless network adapter in Device Manager.
  • 1-3 Check that the wireless network card is enabled.

Please refer to the FAQ below

2. Check whether the distance between your WiFi device and the router is too far: If the distance is too far or there are obstacles, the wireless (WiFi) signal will be interfered with.

Please place the router close to the frequently used WiFi device(computer or phone) . Shorten the distance between the WiFi device and the router and avoid obstacles, and to avoid affecting the signal strength due to the signal transmission distance.

For instructions on improving your wireless signal, please refer to the FAQ below

If there is interference in a specific frequency band, e.g. 5G WiFi signals cannot be found, please adjust to the appropriate channel and bandwidth according to your usage environment, for example, try to set 5G to channel [36] and bandwidth [80MHz].

Please refer to the FAQ below

3. Forget WiFi connection: It is recommended to delete the record of not using the WiFi name on your WiFi device(computer or phone) , then scan the WiFi and reconnect.

Please refer to the FAQ below

4. Check your wireless router's WiFi name: Check if the WiFi name has changed.

4-1 Connect your laptop to the router via wired or WiFi connection and enter your router LAN IP or router URL http://www.asusrouter.com to the WEB GUI.

4-2 In the following example picture, you can see the WiFi name and password. Some functions of wireless will be different due to firmware version.

Example picture(1): Supports routers with firmware earlier than 3.0.0.6.102_35404

Example picture(2): Supports routers with firmware later than 3.0.0.6.102_35404 (including)

Please refer to the FAQ below

5. Check WiFi LED light: Check if your wireless router is set to disabled or hide the WiFi signal.

5-1 For ASUS routers with designed WiFi LED, you can find the WiFi LED on the top or side panel of the router. If the WiFi LED light is not on, it may not be enabled.

5-2 For ASUS routers with designed WiFi hardware button, you can simply press the WiFi button to turn on/off the WiFi signal. This button can be found on the back, front, or side panel of the router.

Note: If you are unsure whether the router has WiFi LED or a WiFi physical button, or if you are unsure of their location, please refer to the user manual for instructions.

5-3 Go to the router settings page to check whether the WiFi signal is disabled or hidden.

a-1 Connect your computer to the router via wired connection and enter your router LAN IP or router URL http://www.asusrouter.com to the Web GUI.

a-2 Check whether the WiFi signal is disabled.

Example picture

Go to Wireless  > Professional,  [ Enable Radio ] defaults to [Yes] (Enabled).

a-3 Check whether the WiFi signal is hidden.

Example picture(1)

Go to Wireless  > General > [Hide SSID], select [Yes] in [Hide SSID] means WiFi name is hidden, select [No] means WiFi name is not hidden.

Example picture(2)

For routers with firmware version 3.0.0.6.102_35404 and later, all WiFi bands for the primary network are enabled by default.

You can simply uncheck the WiFi bands that you want to hide or disable

Please refer to the FAQ below

6. Try to disable the DFS channels

After enabling DFS channels, it is not recommended to enable DFS channels if there is a lot of signal interference in your wireless environment.

When the wireless router detects interference, it will automatically check the status of the 5GHz channel. During this inspection period, the 5GHz signal will be temporarily unavailable, and it may take 1 to 10 minutes before it can reconnect.

Go to [Wireless] > [General], select 5 GHz bands (5GHZ / 5GHZ-2) and uncheck [Auto select channel including DFS channels] to disable the DFS channels

Please note that 2.4GHz can still be used normally when checking channel availability, so users can use the 2.4GHz band first and wait for the 5GHz connection to resume.

Please refer to the FAQ [Wireless Router] What is DFS (Dynamic Frequency Selection) and how does it work on ASUS router

7. Update firmware: Update your firmware regularly to get the latest updates for your router.

Please refer to FAQ [Wireless Router] How to update the firmware of your router to the latest version

8. Please perform Standard Reset on router: please find the RESET button, press it for 5-10 seconds, and power LED will start flashing to finish reset.

Please refer to [Wireless Router] How to reset the router to factory default setting to learn more.
