Yup. Even the most imaginative minds can run short on creative juice and enter a mental block. But ask any artist or enlightened professional and they’ll tell you to look no further - because great ideas are all around. Sometimes, you just need a little help looking in the right direction. Or in this case, the right places to go for some inspiration. That’s why we’ve rounded up 10 spots in Lion City that have the power to turn your thinking cap back on.
Venue 1: The Projector
We start with a classic tale of old meets new. Tucked away on the fifth floor of Golden Mile Tower lies The Projector, Singapore’s very own indie cinema. One step in is all it takes to feel like you’re transported somewhere else as posters and charming, old-world theatre décor and seats welcome you. Pop by in the afternoons to work (thanks, free WiFi!) over a cuppa coffee, or swing by night for live performances, chilli dogs and a craft beer or two.

Venue 2: The Oval @ Seletar Aerospace Park
Speaking of other worlds, here’s another at The Oval down by Seletar Aerospace Park. While it’s off the beaten path, it definitely does not lack in anything. Quite the opposite in fact, as a cluster of former colonial bungalows are transformed into cafes, restaurants, spas and more. We parked ourselves in Wildseed Cafe & Bar on their spacious veranda to take advantage of its scenery - as lush, green foliage made wonderful sketch subjects.

Venue 3: Haji Lane
Haji is home to all things hippy, hipster and everything in between. So get ready to let your hair down and dial up your senses. Stroll down its narrow lanes for sounds of live jazz in your ears, while Mediterranean and Turkish delights tempt you to stop for a bite. If that’s not up your alley, get a taco in one hand, a beer in the other and strike a pose against the colourful murals that stretch two-storeys! We promise, as the street comes alive, so will you.

Venue 4: Tiong Bahru
Now, time-travelling is not possible (yet), but you can come close when inspiration-hunting in one of Singapore’s oldest estates, Tiong Bahru. In this rustic and quiet part of town is where past and present live in perfect harmony. Don’t take our word for it though, go on a photo walk around the estate to see what Art Deco influence once had on residential blocks - before charging up over an iced latte and a crispy, warm croissant at Merci Marcel. Oh là là.

Venue 5: Joo Chiat / Katong
The world’s greatest art pieces and design works have all had their fair share of cultural influence. So why not hit up Singapore’s iconic Joo Chiat and Katong for something Peranakan-inspired? Refresh your senses with the estates’ colourful motifs, fragrant bites, sweet desserts and eclectic row of shops. It may sound like a lot, but that’s what being in a treasure trove full of gems feel like - a treat!

Venue 6: Chip Bee Gardens
Now, if you’ve got a slow, lazy day ahead but a ton of work waiting to be cleared - Chip Bee Gardens in Holland Village might be an ideal choice. After all, the best way around a stressed mind is to sometimes - take a break. So pick a spot, lean back and breathe deeply before getting started. Don’t forget to treat yourself to a sweet bite (or two) along the way! Self-care works as the best medicine for motivation.

Venue 7: Gillman Barracks
Here’s another spot you shouldn’t miss out yon when inspiration-hunting: Singapore’s very own exhibition hub when it comes to all-things art: Gillman Barracks. For starters, there’s always something going on here that you can check out, from art shows to events, movie screenings and more. Plus, it’s surrounded by an enclave of colonial houses that double up as cafes and restaurants for you to chill out at after your little walkabout.

Venue 8: National Museum
For those who need a little midday inspo, head no further than Dhoby Ghaut and City Hall. Home of some of Singapore’s most popular museums from the Singapore Arts Museum to the National Museum or even 8Q Museum - it’s the perfect spot to check out local and international art from all around the world, have lunch meetings or group discussions at. Inspiration’s bound to strike when one’s surrounded by art.

Venue 9: Little India
Little India might be named that way, but it sure isn’t lacking when it comes to ideas and inspiration. In fact, get ready to have your senses dialed all the way up in this bold and beautiful estate. We recommend diving right in to Mustafa for a walk in this mega complex as you get lost in their spice shelves and sports aisles - before heading up to the building’s secret rooftop dome for some kebabs, curries and work.

Venue 10: Botanic Gardens
If all of the above didn’t do the trick, we promise you this last one will. Because sometimes the best way to find inspiration is to let it find you. So grab a mat, head on down to the Botanical Gardens and find yourself a nice, shaded area to rest, relax - and breathe in the wonders all around you. Should inspiration strike, just pen it down, draw it out and get back to your mat! Your mind will thank you later.
