NYK-TDG Maritime Academy equips Seafaring Students with ASUSPRO Notebooks for Internship Abroad

Each year, NYK-TDG Maritime Academy procures units that they send with the students abroad, for use in their Internship in NYK Line’s World-class Marine vessels and facilities all over the globe. When they knew that ASUS has launched its Commercial line of notebooks, and included its offering of official 2 Years Global Warranty in the Philippines, they greatly considered the P2420LJ notebook due to its performance and reliability, plus the available Warranty options. The quality that ASUS Notebooks have established made the P2420LJ their eventual choice among their picks.

    About the NYK-TDG Maritime Academy

The partnership of Nippon Yusen Kaisha or NYK Line of Japan, one of the world’s oldest and largest shipping companies founded in 1885, and the Transnational Diversified Group (TDG), a Filipino-owned business conglomerate established in 1976 has spanned decades of solid relationship. This evolved into different businesses such as shipping, ship crewing, logistics, and back office operations, among others. The ship crewing business of NYK Line and TDG is being managed by NYK-Fil Ship Management, Inc. (NYK-FIL) which to date, is considered as the major supplier of highly qualified officers and crew to NYK Line vessels.

NYK-FIL, in its mission to consistently provide quality officers for NYK Line vessels, has proposed the establishment of a maritime school in 2005 which gave birth to NYK-Transnational Institute Foundation, Inc. (NTIF). NTIF is the owner of the NYK-TDG Maritime Academy (NTMA), a maritime school duly approved by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) in 2006.

Believing in the vision and mission of the school, no less than Her Excellency President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and former President Fidel V. Ramos graced the NTMA Cornerstone-laying Ceremony on 26 November 2005. NTMA started its operation in June 2007.

NYK-TDG Maritime Academy represents the single biggest investment in the Philippines of NYK Line and TDG as their corporate social responsibility and contribution to the global competitiveness of the Filipino Merchant Marine Officers.

    IT Challenge

The NYK-TDG Maritime Academy aims to produce world-class seafarers capable of working efficiently in a mixed-nationality and rigorous Maritime Industry environments. As such, they send their Senior students abroad for a year for their Internship/Exposure, for them to be trained to work in an organized, fast-paced environment, where precision and keenness are required.

To make sure the students are well-equipped, along with them, NTMA sends laptops that can keep up with their students by being fast-booting and powerful enough to run Marine Deck Simulator applications, do simultaneous multi-tasking, and more often than not, keep up with the students as they do heavy workloads on a portable notebook.

In addition to the hardware set, a factor that they considered greatly is the aftersales support. Considering the factor that the units are sent with the students abroad for a year, the notebooks have to be provided with a warranty policy that can keep up with the time and location deployment factor of the units, for easier aftersales services such as repairs, should the notebooks run into a problem while deployed abroad.

    The Solutions

NTMA considered the ASUSPRO P2420LJ Notebooks for various causes. NTMA IT Department requires notebooks with a minimum specification of Intel Core i5 processors and at least 4GB of RAM, since they have to install NYK Shipboard Training and Assessment Recording System (NYK-STARS) in the PCs before sending them to deployment with the students.

Thanks to its slim design and sturdy one-piece build, spacious and tactile keyboard and multi-touch gesture touchpad, powerful processors and graphics options, and RAM options up to 16GB in capacity, students have the freedom to work anywhere, even in demanding working conditions.

In addition to powerful performance, the P2420LJ is also configured with a 6-cell removable battery (and further up to 9-cell) for longer battery runtimes, which is helped further by its powerful yet efficient Intel Core i5 processor and NVIDIA Optimus Technology that switches the used graphics core automatically to help increase efficiency further, and provide more powerful graphics performance on-demand. And the units’ EPEAT Gold and ENERGY STAR® Certification makes sure that they will efficiently run all day, every day.

    The Results

NYK-TDG Maritime Academy eventually chose the P2420LJ as the students’ deployed units due to the balance of productivity and mobility. The slim, one-piece build, and the robust hardware and software sets and configurations, plus the professional look, keeps up with the students as they face the professional world of Maritime Industry thru their Internship. The upgraded global warranty of their units to three years, which includes two years warranty for the battery, also grants added peace of mind to their IT department and the students as they have the units deployed abroad.

As Mr. Donald De Guzman, IT Head of NTMA, remarks: “I’ve tested ASUS already, and I’m impressed because the one that I’m using for almost two years already has never had any problem since new. And now, the units that we have procured are also problem-free up to this point.”
