[Chromebook] Troubleshooting - Touchpad Issues with the Chromebook
You might experience the problem that the Touchpad is insensitive / invalid click / not working, etc. Please follow the steps below, then try testing Touchpad after each step.

The click function of touchpad is not working
You can move the cursor and scroll the page on your Chromebook’s touchpad, but you fail to tap your touchpad to click. You might have disabled the tap-to-click feature. Please follow the steps below to enable the feature.
- Click [Status Bar] at the bottom-right of the screen①, then click [Settings]②.
- Select [Device]③, then select [Touchpad] or ( [Mouse and touchpad])④.
- Toggle on [Enable tap-to-click]⑤.
If the touchpad or cursor responses slowly, please follow the steps below to enable the touchpad acceleration feature.
- Click [Status Bar] at the bottom-right of the screen①, then click [Settings]②.
- Select [Device]③, then select [Touchpad] or ( [Mouse and touchpad])④.
- Toggle on [Enable touchpad acceleration]⑤.
Touchpad’s cursor speed problems
If the cursor is too sensitive or sluggish when moving your finger on the touchpad, please follow the steps below to adjust the touchpad speed.
- Click [Status Bar] at the bottom-right of the screen①, then click [Settings]②.
- Select [Device]③, then select [Touchpad] or ( [Mouse and touchpad])④.
- Drag the slider of [Touchpad speed]⑤ depending on your needs.
If the scroll direction doesn’t match your preference, please follow the steps below to enable/disable the reverse scrolling.
- Click [Status Bar] at the bottom-right of the screen①, then click [Settings]②.
- Select [Device]③, then select [Touchpad] or ( [Mouse and touchpad])④.
- Toggle on or off the [Enable reverse scrolling] feature⑤ depending on your needs.
Note: Turn off Reverse (swipe up to move the page up). Turn on Reverse (swipe up to move the page down).
If you have other problems with your touchpad, try these steps:
- Make sure there is no dust or dirt on the touchpad. If you do not clean the touchpad regularly, it may accumulate dust or dirt over time and lead to work defective. If you need to clean the touchpad, please refer to this article: How to clean your laptop.
- Press the [Esc] key several times. The Esc key is able to stop loading the current page. If something on the page is causing your Chromebook to malfunction or freeze, pressing Esc a few times can interrupt the process and get things back to normal.
Note: The keyboard may vary by model, you can learn more about finding the right user manual to check the keyboard in this article: How to search and download user manuals. - Drumroll your fingers on the touchpad for ten seconds. Gently tap your fingers on your touchpad to create a drumroll effect. This way could dislodge dirt or particles stuck around or underneath the touchpad.
- Restart the Chromebook. Press and hold the [Power button] until the device power off, then power it on again.
- Try to use the touchpad in the Guest account.
If you have signed-in to the Chromebook, sign out first. Click [Status Bar] at the bottom-right of the screen①, then click [Sign out]②.
Click [Browse as Guest] at the bottom③. If the touchpad work, delete the account that has the problem on your Chromebook and then add it again. - If you experience touchpad issues with the account that is not the owner (primary) account, delete the user account and re-create it.
On the sign-in screen, click the [Down arrow]④ in the bottom-right of the profile picture, then click [Remove account]⑤. - Perform a hard reset on your Chromebook hardware. Here you can learn more about How to reset your Chromebook hardware.
- If the problem persists after all troubleshooting steps are completed. Please try to Reset or Recover the Chromebook.
Reset (Powerwash) your Chromebook to factory settings. - Recovery Chromebook operating system.
