Creating the Impossible
Creating the Impossible
Victor Perez is a Film Director and a Visual Effects Supervisor, in his own words: born in Spain, raised in Italy, and made in Britain, currently based in London (England), a multicultural background holding 3 nationalities means travel is in his DNA. “My job as a VFX Supervisor is to create ‘the impossible’ and to make it look like it’s real,” he explains, adding that this task is deeply related to the storytelling nature of images, as for he, making beautiful pictures is as important as creating meaningful images.

The works of visual effects department is to be able to show on the screen anything that was not possible to craft for real, from the unnoticeable to the ridiculous. He studied Performing Arts and years later Cinematography at the International Academy of Image Arts and Science founded by 3 times Academy Award® Vittorio Storaro. Victor has worked in several Hollywood blockbusters helping directors envision their stories. Now he is moving into telling his own stories in ways never seen before.
Science, Technology & Art
Science, Technology & Art
“The three main components of my work are: Science, Technology and Art. Science require study, and the language of science is mathematics, a part that I love because it’s exact, so you can be either right or wrong, so using that as a fundamental of analysis is paramount; in the other hand Art require practice, faith in the process and be able to use chaos as source material, creating art is a wild experience; in VFX, Science and Art go hand in hand, two almost antithetical elements connected through Technology, an inexorable constant evolving force that defines our ability to create. The alchemy of those three elements defines you as an artist. Art and Science are within the artist, Technology isn’t but conditions the other two. What is the point of having a great eye for details if your monitor can represent detail accurately? What’s the point of speed if your computer is not as fast as your hands?
The Key to Success
The Key to Success
Asked for advice from aspiring artists and fellow creators Victor replies: “Don’t wait for the opportunity to come to you when you’ll be prepared. Opportunities can arise at any moment so you better be ready, and there is only one way to be prepared: Do you want to be an artist? Create art. Use anything you have available, a true artist will emerge from within regardless. I believe you don’t get to choose if you are an artist or not, you can either accept it and do your best, or give up by denying who you are, resigning your dreams and stop listening to your inner voice to start listening to others. So I ask you again: Do you want to be an artist? Then create art, no excuses. The advantage of working with ASUS ProArt hardware is that it has been specifically designed for the creative minds, like me. Then if the opportunity don’t arrive: create your own opportunities. Be ready.”
Sending the Elevator Back Down
Sending the Elevator Back Down
In parallel and compatible with his professional career as an artist, Victor has always loved to share his knowledge and his work with the global community of visual effects professionals, “When you've reached the top remember to send the elevator back down for the others”. Regularly invited at renowned events such as Siggraph, FMX, VIEW Conference... plus many more. The specialize press use to cover his work: Cinefex, FXGuide, The VFX Voice, and Before & Afters just to mention a few. In 2012 Victor was voted one of the most influential visual effects artists in the world by the prestigious publication Nukepedia. Internationally considered a VFX compositing guru, Victor has delivered Master Classes regarding hi research in Photorealistic Full-CGI Compositing at industry-leading institutions such as Pixar Animation Studios or the Double Negative.

In 2016 Victor is invited to talk at TED, showcasing his research and ideas and how they are connected with his personal life. During this talk he was able to feature a live demo on stage of the process of visual effects compositing with his laptop. During his talk he made public the event that changed his life: a earthquake where he lost everything in 2009, and how he was able to overcome the difficulties and become a Master of VFX worldwide thanks to a laptop his friends donated to him. His life has been always interlinked with technology since he was a little child and he consider himself to have a very playful approach to work citing a quote from George Bernard Shaw: “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing”.
Technology that Adapts to Humans
Technology that Adapts to Humans
When I’m creating I have no room in my mind to think about anything else but my art. The computer is an extension of my hands, the monitor is an extension of my eyes. I become one with Technology in order to create. So I like technology that adapts to humans, not the other way around. That is what I feel when I use the ProArt Studiobook Pro 16 OLED, it’s an extension, of myself as an artist, and like me it can move and travel, capture and source my inspiration. I have enough RAM (64GB 3200 MHz DDR4), a powerful Processor (Intel XEON W-11955M with 8 core and 16 threads), a flawless 16-inch OLED 4K HDR monitor to display the images from my Nvidia RTX A5000 graphics card, a big and fast SSD storage (4TB 7000MB/s), light to carry, long battery, a stable technology and a responsive Support Service… and let’s face it: beautiful, for someone who creates beauty, aesthetics matter. That’s all I need on the go, no more, no less.

When I need critical precision for color I have the ProArt PA32UCG monitor, a gorgeous Dolby Vision® certified 4K HDR display, essential. With it I can trust my eyes for what I see is what I get, pure blacks, vivid and precise colors and levels of brightness in accordance to the latest and highest industry standards: Calman Verified and Pantone® Validated.

In a world were touch devices are part of our everyday life it seems just right to have an extra display to work with my setup that allows me to use my hands and create in the most organic way: using my hands. Artist and Artisan, once you get used to get your hands involved you can’t go back to other less organic ways, it’s natural. That’s the perk of the ProArt PA148CTV, a portable monitor that is now part of my creative palette of devices.

I don’t need to worry about Technology because ASUS ProArt cares about it for me to focus on my craft. That’s my secret, I work with the best.”
