LCD vs OLED Laptop: Which one to choose?

When it comes to choosing a laptop, one of the most important decisions you'll make is the type of display you want. Two of the most popular options are OLED and LCD. OLED laptops are becoming increasingly popular, as they offer a number of advantages over traditional LCD laptops. On the other hand, LCD displays offer several key benefits over a laptop with an OLED display in certain situations. Whether OLED is better than LCD depends on your individual needs and preferences. In this article, we are going to list out the pros and cons of both OLED and LCD displays:

OLED Displays:

OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode. It's a newer display technology that's becoming increasingly popular. An OLED screen laptop offer superior picture quality to LCDs, with deeper blacks, brighter whites, and a wider range of colors. They also have wider viewing angles, so you can see the screen clearly even if you're not sitting directly in front of it.

Here are some of the reasons why OLED is better than LCD:

  • Contrast ratio: OLED displays have a much higher contrast ratio than LCD displays. This means that OLED displays can produce much darker blacks and brighter whites, resulting in a more realistic and immersive picture.

  • Color accuracy: OLED displays also have better color accuracy than LCD displays. This means that OLED displays can reproduce colors more accurately, resulting in a more vibrant and lifelike picture.

  • Viewing angles: OLED displays have nearly perfect viewing angles. This means that the picture quality remains consistent even when viewed from off-center angles. LCD displays, on the other hand, can suffer from color and contrast shifts when viewed from off-center angles.

  • Less harmful Blue Light: Blue light can cause eye strain and make it difficult to sleep. However, ASUS OLED laptops emit 70% less harmful blue light thanks to the unique organic lighting materials used in their displays. This is also certified by TÜV Rheinland and SGS.
Additionally, unlike traditional blue light filters that reduce color accuracy, ASUS OLED laptops maintain accurate colors without compromising eye health.

  • Response time: OLED displays have a much faster response time than LCD displays. This means that OLED displays are less likely to suffer from motion blur and other artifacts.

LCD Displays:

LCD, or liquid crystal display, is the most common type of display used in laptops. It works by using a backlight to illuminate a liquid crystal layer, which then allows or blocks light to pass through. LCDs are known for their affordability, wide viewing angles, and long lifespans.

Here are some of the advantages of LCD displays over OLED displays:

  • Affordability: LCD displays are more affordable to manufacture than OLED displays, which makes them a more cost-effective option for laptops.

  • Long lifespans: LCD displays have long lifespans, and they are less susceptible to burn-in than OLED displays. Burn-in is a permanent image retention issue that can occur on OLED displays if the same image is displayed on the screen for an extended period of time.

  • Higher refresh rates: LCD displays can achieve higher refresh rates than OLED displays. This is important for gamers, as a higher refresh rate can make games appear smoother and more responsive.

In Summary:

Overall, OLED is the superior display technology in terms of picture quality. It offers perfect blacks, infinite contrast ratio, excellent color accuracy, and wide viewing angles. However, OLED displays are more expensive and are susceptible to burn-in, which is a permanent image retention issue that can occur if static images are displayed for long periods of time.

LCD displays are a good option if you are on a budget or are concerned about burn-in. They are still capable of producing good picture quality, but they cannot match the performance of OLED displays in terms of contrast ratio and black levels.

While OLED laptops are better than traditional LCD screens, they can have burn-in issues. Burn-in is the persistence of elements on the screen even once the scene being displayed has been changed. This is an irreversible damage and can worsen with time.

To ensure that this doesn’t happen on OLED laptops, ASUS has a suite of burn-in prevention measures on every ASUS OLED laptop. These include:

  • Default shipping in Windows dark mode.

  • OLED screen protection: Dim the screen after 5-minutes idle.

  • Samsung OLED burn-in refine technology: in case some pixels do get burnt, the drivers of the panel will increase the current to those areas, increasing the luminosity of such pixels and ensuring a consistent visual experience.

  • Special screensaver that automatically refreshes every pixel on the screen.

  • Warranty of OLED screens: 7000hrs guaranteed (@200nit).
