Key Pillars for Sustainability at ASUS
A primary sustainability goal of ASUS involves achieving net-zero
for operations by 2050. To reach this goal, ASUS focuses on four
main pillars:
Climate Action
Extreme weathers due to climate change can be detrimental to the
fundamentals of society, causing power outages, transportation
disruption, operation plant shutdowns and more. To do our part to
mitigate climate change, ASUS focuses on reduction of carbon
emissions, increasing use of renewable energy, producing more
energy-efficient products, and supporting our suppliers in carbon
reduction.
In 2023, 25% of carbon emissions from ASUS global operation centers
were reduced through replacing high-energy-consuming equipment and
achieving 30% renewable energy adoption. We also signed a Corporate
Power Purchase Agreement (CPPA) for renewable energy used in ASUS
headquarters and operation centers and procured renewable energy
certificates for overseas ASUS centers. This reduces ASUS’s carbon
emission and fosters the development of the renewable energy market.
ASUS seeks to improve the energy efficiency of every new model
released in our key product lines. ENERGY STAR® is the strictest
energy program in the world and all ASUS consumer and commercial
laptops launched in 2023 exceeded ENERGY STAR® standards by 42% on
average. The newest models in our consumer laptop lineup such as
Zenbook DUO
exceeds ENERGY STAR® standards by a whopping 43%.
The ASUS supply chain is essential to our operation, but it is also
one of the main contributors to the company’s carbon footprint. By
assisting our suppliers in developing carbon reduction plans and by
setting reduction targets while facilitating our suppliers’ adoption
of renewable energy, we helped our key suppliers achieve a 26%
reduction in carbon intensity compared to 2020 (our baseline year).
Circular Economy
Instead of following the traditional linear economic model of
‘take-make-dispose’, ASUS has adopted the values of a circular
economy. In this effort, ASUS focuses on using more eco-friendly
materials, registering products for eco labels such as EPEAT and
exceeding their criteria, enhancing R&D system safety, and improving
product recyclability.
In 2023, many ASUS products featured recycled paper in 90% of
packaging, and over 2,400 post-consumer recycled plastic (PCR) were
used in both products and packaging since 2017. More than 90% of
ASUS’s qualified revenue came from eco-friendly products in 2023.
For instance,
Zenbook S 13 OLED (UX5304)
is registered as EPEAT Gold and has achieved EPEAT Climate+, which
indicate that it meets the strictest eco-friendly criteria and
contributes to climate action.
ASUS also offers take-back services in 30 countries around the
world, covering 82% of our sales market. In 2023, ASUS achieved a
13% product recycling rate and we aim to grow that to 20% in 2025.
Responsible Manufacturing
ASUS collaborates closely with suppliers, tracking quality, carbon
emission, working conditions, and manufacturing processes. In 2023,
ASUS conducted third-party on-site audits of suppliers, identified
key suppliers with potential risks, and provided support and
assistance in cases where deficiencies were discovered. We are proud
to say that 100% of our key suppliers have completed the audits and
improvements required for eliminating potential risks during
production.
Minerals are important elements used in ASUS products and 100% of
our tantalum, tin, tungsten, and gold are sourced from qualified
smelters. In 2025, we aim to increase our cobalt sourcing from
qualified smelters to 100%. In addition to material integrity, ASUS
cares about the wellness of workers within the company and within
our suppliers’ businesses. ASUS requires suppliers to comply with
legal, social, and environmental standards and conducts full review
of suppliers before contracting with them.
Value Creation
ASUS creates shared value through our corporate competencies by
promoting digital transformation to equip society with necessary
tools for thriving in this digital age. We achieve value creation
through multiple methods, including through campus events and
competitions, by establishing corporate and academic collaboration
programs, by donating new and refurbished hardware to people in
need, and by supporting our subsidiaries and suppliers to digitize
their carbon data through the ASUS A+ ESG Carbon Data Management
Platform.
In 2023, we organized 15 campus events that connected over 1,000
people. Ever since 2008 up to 2023, Asus has established more than
500 digital opportunity centers in 39 countries and donated over
20,000 new computers in total.
In 2024, ASUS guided 117 of our subsidiary companies and 800
suppliers to adopt usage of the ASUS A+ ESG Carbon Data Management
Platform for comprehensive digital management of carbon data across
the whole enterprise’s value chain. In 2025, we aim to enhance our
efforts and exceed what we’ve achieved in 2023.
