[Chromebook] Troubleshooting - Abnormalities with the Chromebook Touchscreen

If you encounter touchscreen issues, such as insensitivity or abnormal clicking when using your Chromebook, this article provides some possible causes and solutions.

Verify if your Chromebook supports touch screen function

Before troubleshooting, you can first check if your Chromebook supports touchscreen function through the Asus official website.

  1. Go to the ASUS official website, click on the [Search] icon, and then enter your product model name. If you are unsure about your Chromebook's product model, please refer to this article: How to check the model’s name. (The following steps use the model CX3400 as an example)
  2. After entering the product page, click on [Tech Specs]
  3. In the Tech Specs page, you can find information on touchscreen/stylus support in the Display specification column

If the touchscreen is not functioning properly, it is recommended to follow the following steps in sequence to confirm whether the touchscreen can function properly:

Step 1: Clean the screen

Make sure there is no dust or stains on the screen. If it is not cleaned regularly, the touchscreen may accumulate dust or stains over time, which may cause it to malfunction. If you need to clean the screen, please refer to the following steps:

  1. Please turn off the computer first, and carefully check the condition of the screen for any external damage.
  2. Spray the screen cleaner onto a soft and clean cloth, and gently wipe the screen to remove any stains or particles.
Note: Only make the cloth slightly damp, and do not spray the cleaning liquid directly on the screen or leave too much water on the screen. If you do not have a screen cleaner, you can use water instead.
  3. Wait for the screen to dry naturally, then turn on the computer again and check whether the touchscreen function is normal.
Note: To avoid this problem from happening again, it is recommended to use clean hands or a stylus to touch the screen.
  4. If your computer uses a screen protector or a privacy filter, it is recommended to remove it first to confirm whether it is causing the screen touch abnormality.

Step 2: Restart the Chromebook

Restarting the Chromebook may solve some temporary problems, such as software or system errors.

Please press and hold [Power button] until the computer shuts down, and then turn it back on.

Step 3: Check for Chrome OS updates

Updating the Chrome operating system can help solve software and security issues. Please make sure that your Chromebook has installed the latest version of Chrome OS. To check for available updates, please refer to this article: Update your Chromebook’s operating system.

Step 4: Reset Chromebook hardware settings

Reset the Chromebook hardware to its original settings. Please refer to this article for operation: How to reset Chromebook hardware (hard reset).

Step 5: Recover Chromebook to factory settings

If the above troubleshooting steps have been completed, but the problem still exists, please reset or recover the Chromebook:

Reset (Powerwash) your Chromebook to factory settings.

Recover Chromebook operating system.
