ASUS Lumina OLED, Explained
ASUS Lumina OLED is the name for a new generation of laptop displays
with unprecedented visual quality for outstanding user experiences.
These displays set a very high standard: they are more accurate,
adaptive, and more reliable than most OLED displays.
But let's start with the basics: What does OLED mean?
What is an OLED display?
OLED is a term describing the display technology used in many ASUS
laptops. It’s an acronym for organic light-emitting diodes. The
unique characteristic of an OLED display is that each pixel is
self-illuminated — its own light source. The technology doesn’t
utilize backlight like other displays. OLED displays are usually
composed of three separately-lit sub-pixels in red, green, and blue
colors.
Benefits of OLED Displays
An OLED screen offers users unique advantages, as compared to other
types of displays. The self-illuminated nature of its pixels makes
for a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and the deepest, inky blacks. On
the practical side, that means that when the screen is displaying
black portions of the image, the respective sections of the screen
are completely turned off, not emitting any light. This means there
isn’t any aura or light bleed, as usually seen on backlit displays.
That translates into an unprecedented level of detail in your
favorite movies or games or any other visuals.
OLED displays are capable of displaying a very wide range of colors
— up to over 60 times the amount that most LCD laptops do (1.07
billion vs. 16.7 million). They offer 100% DCI-P3 color gamut
coverage for perfect color accuracy and vibrant images.
Self-illumination carries another benefit. Imagery on most laptop
displays can look dull at times when working at low brightness
levels, since the light source is dimmed all across the entire
screen. Not so with OLED screens. With such displays, you can count
on vivid colors and great visibility even at low brightness levels.
Many of the OLED screens from ASUS work at a 120 Hz refresh rate and
feature 0.2 ms response, making for great on-screen motion clarity
and blur-free on-screen movement. That translates into smooth movie
and video playback or scrolling.
To protect your vision further, OLED screens cut potentially harmful
blue light emissions by as much as 70%. That does not only benefit
the long-term protection of your eyesight but also benefits your
sleep quality.
Excessive blue light, especially at night, can disrupt the
secretion of melatonin
— a hormone that helps regulate our sleeping schedule.
