Making the virtual real
Taiwan-based Grass Jelly Studio provides a complete range of video services from directing through to visual effects (VFX) production, often collaborating with iconic celebrities in Asia on astonishing and award-winning productions. In recent years, it's become one of Asia's best VFX teams for advertising and music video production, and its creations regularly hit hundreds of millions of views on YouTube.
Like many other kids of his generation, Grass Jelly Studio's Eason Chen spent far too much time reading comics and watching cartoons when he was young. His love of graphic design and animation eventually led him to the current stage of his career as a Senior 3D Animator and VFX Designer. Eason is fascinated by the idea of combining computer graphics (CG) and VFX in films, which allows him to create complete virtual sets from scratch. His measure of success is when the audience can't tell which parts are real and which are virtual in the films he produces.
International accolades
In the past few decades working with Grass Jelly Studio, Eason has participated in many projects with scores of iconic artists and celebrities in Asia, including Namie Amuro, Jacky Cheung, Angelababy, Lee Min Ho, MayDay, Jolin Tsai and Jay Chou, to name just a few. Its clients also include many international brands, such as Adidas, Pepsi, Nike, P&G, Heineken, Mercedes-Benz, Sony Taiwan and Eva Air.
Grass Jelly Studio's unique creative approach and commercial success has resulted in an impressive collection of international awards and accolades. The latest include winner of the Best VFX award at 2021 Rome Music Video Awards; an iF Design Award 2021 for Communication designs - Digital Media, Germany; and winner of the Best Music Video, United States at the 2020 Global Film Festival Awards. Creating with ProArt
Eason loves the creative freedom that his ProArt Studiobook Pro X gives him. “The outstanding performance is comparable to our desktop PCs,“ he explains. “Normally on a shoot we’d need to move our bulky desktops and monitors to the filming location. But the Studiobook Pro X gives us the same capabilities, with much less equipment.“
“Another advantage of this laptop is that the 180° hinge allows the screen to lay completely flat. This makes it easier to have discussions with directors and colleagues.“ Eason loves the ASUS ScreenPad too. “With ScreenPad, we can quickly see the building blocks of our work, while we use the main display to show our working content.“
Eason is equally impressed by his 27-inch ProArt Display PA27UCX HDR Mini-LED Professional Monitor. “The ultra-bright display is color-accurate, and has a wide color gamut that accurately renders all our 3D creations across different devices,“ he enthuses. “It supports multiple HDR formats, which gives us much more flexibility when processing HDR content.“ He really appreciates the built-in calibration technology, and finds the powerful user interface “really easy to use!“
Stay curious
When asked what advice he'd give to young aspiring creators, Eason's reply was refreshingly simple. ”Stay curious. Don’t limit yourself. And expose yourself to as many different design works as you can.”
